A cheap VPS for CFML? - ColdFusion and Railo

CFML hosting has always been more difficult then static html and php to find. I have tried a few and some are good and some are cheap. There is next to nothing that both reliable and cheap. However there are options.

Recently I have been reading the Low End Box blog : http://www.lowendbox.com and decided that $5-10 VPS's may be cheap and perhaps unreliable but for that price I had to give it a go and so far its been great. I have half the demos from this blog running there with Railo and mySQL along with a few other test projects.

Another good one is Slicehost they have a good name, for $20 you can get a 256 meg VPS and they are fast here is an example of Railo on Slice host: http://www.bigimpactmarketing.co.uk/ ( By @clarkee21 )

So for anyone that's thinking about Railo consider a cheap low end VPS you might be much better then you think.

BTW you may want to brush up on your linux skillz and download putty ;)

And for those that asked my most recent VPS is with 2Host

  1. I use automatedvps.com It is $50/m but I have 1 GB ram and Win2008 server. I have some old client projects which use MSSQL and I had to get a win box and happy about the service.

    JM2C. :)

  2. @Oğuz A server like that would be great to share among a few people for blogs etc. As long as one of you have a ColdFusion license ( unless you go Railo/OpenBD ). All our production servers are Windows but I'm comfortable with linux aswell but access to MS SQL would be nice for side projects.

  3. I won my CF8 license in UG tours raffles. :)

    I won also CS3 & CS4. :)

I have both CF8 std and Railo (Tomcat) on my VPS. Depending on the project I just use related server.

  4. Another excellent option for affordable CF VPS accounts is VivioTech. I've heard nothing but good things about there service and their VPS accounts also start at $20 per month.

    Best,

  5. We've had great luck at eApps (www.eapps.com). They have a broad range of plans, and fantastic service. That's where we host the Mura CMS site (www.GetMura.com), along with a few of our clients' sites (all using Railo).

  6. I think with the introduction of Railo and OpenBD we have alot more options now as we don't have to pay any additional premiums to work with CFML code and cheaper blank VPS's are now a viable option whereas spending an additional $1200ish for ColdFusion ( unless you win it like Oğuz ;) ) is opten to much of an additional expense.

    Thanks for the alternative suggestions.

  10. @Stelio OK not really sure what you are trying to point out with that link? As I mentioned I am using a light cheap VPS for demos and as a sandbox for testing I also have several Dedicated boxes and some of my ( and customers ) in colo.

A $5-10 VPS can be a really good investment as a sandbox solution but I would hardly consider putting something important there.
